evacuation of the concentration camps
On January 17, 1945, the SS forced the prisoners to leave the Auschwitz camp complex and go on death marches; prisoners who could not travel were left behind. Until January 26, SS men tried to erase the traces of their crimes: archives and buildings were destroyed. On January 27, 1945, Red Army units reached Auschwitz and liberated the surviving prisoners.
